To some ex-members, the M-A-T-C-H in Match.com stands for Misadventures That Crush Hope.
Me? I’ve had better luck. My two amazing kids wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t met their mom (who happens to be a great mom) on Match when the site was just taking off.
Back then, I certainly never expected to be on Match.com again in 2017. But life is what happens once you’ve made other plans.
I was just another guy looking for a meaningful relationship, but I ended up on what will go down (for me) as the Most Meaningful Date of All Time.
On our second Match.com date, a woman I’ll call Joy told me that her daughter had asked her what the Meaning for Life is. She sighed and rolled her eyes, as if to say, “Isn’t parenthood hard enough already?”
I chuckled sympathetically. “Let me give it some thought,” I said, half kidding. “I’ll get back to you in a few days with the Meaning of Life."
Well, as you can tell, I gave it a lot of thought. As promised, I got back to Joy with my definition a few nights later. I also told her I think everyone needs to define the Meaning of Life for themselves. We had a lovely conversation.
The more I thought about it, the more I sensed I was coming up with a very helpful framework for people to explore the most important question that has ever been asked. I bounced it off all sorts of people. Most had a few skeptical questions at first. But before long, to my great surprise, almost everyone was nodding, including some of the smartest, most critical top executives I've ever worked with.
Just a few months later, Corporate America was in my rear-view mirror, and MeaningOfLife.com was my new baby.
As for Joy, I never saw her again. She sent me one of the more gracious I’m-just-not-that-into- you texts that has ever been written. The bottom line, though? She took the Meaning ofLife and ran. C’est la vie on Match.com.
Joy, if you ever read this, rest assured there are no hard feelings. In fact, I feel nothing but gratitude. Please thank your daughter. She asked a really good question.
Today, for the rest of us, there has never been a better time to ask it.
Welcome to MeaningOfLife.com.
